Attention Servicemembers and Spouses,

The acronyms most often used when referencing military service and the lifestyle of the military servicemember and their families can seem like a language which is impossible to understand. Do yourself a favor and take the time to familiarize yourself with these acronyms as your understanding of them may be beneficial to you during a divorce. Additionally, be sure that any attorney you seek assistance from understands these acronyms and the law behind them.

Terms for Military Members and Their Families

BAH: Basic Allowance for Housing
BAQ: Basic Allowance for Quarters (Air Force)
BAS: Basic Allowance for Subsistence
DFAS: Defense Finance and Accounting Service
FAP: Family Assistance Program
FSPA: The Uniform Services Former Spousal Protection Act (10 U.S.C. §1408 et seq.)
HAP: Homeowners Assistance Program
LES: Leave and Earning Statement
OHA: Overseas Housing Allowance
PCS: Permanent Change of Station
SBP: Survivor Benefits Plan
SGLI: Servicemember Group Life Insurance
